The Truth About Chiropractic Adjustments

Throughout my past few years of practice, some of the most common misconceptions I’ve heard surround chiropractic adjustments. Every day, I have someone come into my office who has a misconception about the chiropractic adjustment. Even if you google it, all you see are blogs by chiropractors that still don’t tell you the truth. So as a chiropractor, I’m here to set the record straight.

1. They don’t “fix” or change your alignment.

First off, your alignment is your alignment. There’s nothing wrong with it and there’s nothing that needs to be fixed. You’ve been living your whole life with your spine alignment and unless you have severe scoliosis then it’s most likely not attributing to your pain. Second, if it were that easy to change someone’s alignment, I would be able to fix scoliosis and I would be a billionaire.

2. They don’t put bones back in place.

You’re bones aren’t “out of place” and you can’t move bones with a little adjustment. If it were that easy to move bones, that would make contact sports like football impossible. If it were that easy to move bones, they would dislocate their vertebrae every time someone gets tackled or makes a hit in football.

3. They can’t even out your hips.

The SI joint where your pelvis and sacrum articulate has very little range of motion. Even with the small degree of movement, it’s still impossible for chiropractors to move or align them. Even so, if your hips or legs or off by a small amount, it’s probably not enough to cause your pain. We constantly walk and stand on uneven surfaces. We aren’t that fragile where that small amount of difference is going to cause us pain.

4. They do help give pain relief.

Chiropractic adjustments are great for giving temporary pain relief. Even still they should only be one piece of the puzzle. Adjustments alone are not going to fix your complaint. I think they’re great and I provide them in patient care. However, I believe that the best way to help get patients out of pain and achieve their goals is through progressive rehab. Soft tissue work and adjustments are great for short-term pain relief. And I still provide those to all my patients. It’s an important piece of the puzzle. However, for the long-term results, that’s where the rehab and exercises come into play.

I hope this short blog has helped clear some things up for you and helped you better understand the chiropractic adjustment.
